Immigration Prompts; choose one; use text,
A. There are 12 million illegal immigrants in the USA. What do you think should be done? 1. Compare immigrant treatment today with policy around 1900. 2. Justify your decision using evidence and opinions from the primary source documents and your text book p. 900.
1.INS should round them up and return them to their country. We can then create a new Bracero Program and they can work here for a few months each year as needed.
2.There should be “amnesty” and everyone here should be given citizenship.
3.Illegals should have a ‘Path to citizenship’; learn english; pay a fine; wait 5 years; get in line behind others;
4.Illegals should leave the country and then apply to the USA for a visa or green card. There should be a quota that would limit the number of immigrants from Mexico and Central America.
B. Many immigrants from Asia and Europe came for opportunity, but faced discrimination and racism. The same is true for immigrants today. Compare and justify as above. (this prompt does not directly address #1-4 above)
use textbook p. 900; p. 254- ; use notes and answers from primary source readings in class
